Online PhD in Counseling Psychology

If you are seeking a career in professional practice in psychology, then a graduate program in counseling psychology can get you there. There are dozens of APA accredited Ph.D. or Psy.D. programs across the U.S. providing the education and experience needed to become licensed. Many of the counseling psychology programs offer a wide range of psychology course work along with a multidisciplinary approach to professional practice. For those with a Masters in Counseling Psychology, see additional admissions requirements below for PhD programs.

The Difference between PsyD vs PhD in Counseling Psychology

A PhD in Psychology indicates that the professional in question perhaps has an inclination to perform more of the research and teaching aspects of the field. On the other hand, the Doctorate of Psychology (PsyD) is one of the two highest degrees available in the field of psychology. Until the 1960s, the only doctoral option was that of the PhD. While prestigious, popular opinion indicated that PhD graduates were not entirely ready for clinical practice, and thus the PsyD degree was developed in order train psychologists as clinical practitioners.

Admission Requirements Online

There is some variety between the application processes for various doctoral programs but the processes are generally consistent throughout the U.S. While there is some degree of variance in the application processes between various schools, the guidelines are mostly consistent throughout North America.

Prerequisites

Doctorate programs will require prerequisite courses along with school transcripts in order to verify that courses were taken to meet the admissions criteria. Students may also have to complete all required hours for placements and internships prior to consideration by the admissions panel.

GRE Standard Test/Results

For many doctorate programs, the application package requires submission of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Check with the admissions office of the program you are interested in to see if they require or recommend taking the GRE.

Online Application Form and Fee

Most schools have a secure online method by which to submit student application, admission fee, and tuition funds. Students should follow the directions in order to confirm that data has been received successfully by the school.

Current Resume or CV

A current CV or resume informs the doctorate admissions committee of the interests of the candidate as well as any contributions they have made to the field.

Official Transcripts

Doctorate admissions committees require a minimum of one set of official transcripts from every post-secondary and graduate institution that the candidate has attended. Some programs require an additional original copy for reference purposes.

Letters of Recommendation from Faculty or Professional Contacts

A key part of a candidate’s admissions package is the two or three letters of recommendation that the doctorate committee requires. At the doctorate level, strong letters of recommendation are key to having a noteworthy application package.

Personal Statement

On par with the letters of recommendation, candidates are given an opportunity to display their skills, experience, and personality by providing a thoughtful personal statement of intention to the committee. Criteria for the statement will vary; please ensure that the guidelines are adhered to strictly.

Interview

At the doctoral level, virtually all viable candidates are interviewed prior to acceptance. Committees are looking for diversity and originality of ideas; candidates that are candid, pleasant, and able to articulate noteworthy answers to the questions will stay front-of-mind.

Counseling Psychology PhD Program Details Online

The information below is to provide a general overview of what most PhD programs in Counseling Psychology entail, including typical coursework, research, and internships.

Coursework

Please note that there is some degree of variation concerning the depth and breadth of the courses that a particular program may offer based on the strengths and interests of its faculty members. Professional organizations like the APA are clear however, that coursework should be developed in such a way that it fosters students self-knowledge, hones their ethical sense, and clearly articulates and forms valuable learning outcomes.

Some courses and specialty workshops offered by schools across the nation are:

  • Interpersonal Psychology
  • Advanced Research Methods
  • Diversity and Counseling Skills
  • Psychopathology
  • Psychological Analysis of Culture: Psychotherapy
  • Group Counseling: Psychological Perspectives
  • Developmental Psychology
  • Neuropsychology
  • Ethics
  • Laws Governing Psychology
  • Aspects of Family Therapy

  • Psychology and Sexuality
  • Relationships
  • Advanced Theory in Psychotherapy
  • Psychopharmacology
  • Psychodiagnostics
  • Advanced Research Methods

Research

At the doctorate level, research is a crucial part of a counseling psychology program. From the time a student enters the program until the commencement of internship, students will have continuous involvement in research. This type of immersion serves to mentor students on all practical aspects of the research process.

Undergraduate Teaching

As teaching remains one of the most effective ways of synthesizing information, it is expected that doctorate students spend a minimum of one semester teaching undergraduate or graduate level students. The faculty endeavours to match teaching assistants with courses of interest, but this is not always possible. Courses are assigned on a semester-by-semester basis.

Fieldwork/Internships

Some programs require students complete a minimum number practice hours in order to graduate. Students are encouraged to include a variety of venues in their placement rotation in order to receive the full benefit of differences in treatment methods, patient populations, and supervisors – all which lead to a solid internship experience.

Dissertation

A dissertation paper is an in-depth discussion of a relevant issue that is of interest to the candidate. The span of the research and writing of the dissertation is usually around 18 months. Students are expected to use the opportunity to display their independent research, analysis, synthesis, and argument skills in the creation and defense of their dissertation.

Program Length

Doctoral Counseling Psychology Phd & PsyD programs average 5 years in length. For example, the program format can be as follows:

Year 1: Coursework and specialty workshops

Year 2: Coursework and specialty workshops

Year 3: Practicum, Internship, and Research

Year 4: Practicum, Internship, and Research

Year 5: Dissertation and Teaching

While the program does have some variation based on how candidates proceed, the above list is a typical progression.

Costs and Financial Aid

The cost of an average doctorate in Counseling Psychology can be upwards of $100,000, over the course of 5 years. However, financial aid may be available.

There are a number of federal and state loan opportunities that are available to doctorate students.

The Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan

The Federal Unsubsidized Direct Loan is a federally guaranteed loan, with repayment starting a half year after graduation. Interest payments must be kept up to date during the time that the loan is active. The maximum borrowable amount is approximately $20,000 per academic year.

Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan

The Federal Direct Graduate PLUS Loan Program allows graduate and doctoral students to borrow money that covers the entire cost of their tuition on an annual basis. Students are required to pass a credit check; bankruptcy will cause the conditions to require a co-signer. The rate of this loan program locks during the summer time of a given year for the life of the loan.

Private Educational Loans

Students that are interested in applying for a private education loan may contact their school’s financial aid office for a list of banks offering these loans. Interest rates and repayment terms will vary but students should know that private loans might cover the entire cost of their education.

Scholarships, Grants, Loans and Employee Tuition Reimbursements

There are many scholarships, grants, and tuition reimbursements available to graduate students. Fund availability is usually dependent on financial need, academic qualification, and demographic of the applicant.

Scholarships

Scholarships, grants, and tuition reimbursements are available to doctoral students. Edibility is determined based on financial need, academic qualification, and demographic of the applicant.

Getting Licensed

Licensing boards in the United States are agencies devoted to safeguarding the academic and ethical integrity of their members for the greater good of the profession.

Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP)

Licensing boards are members of the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards (ASPPB). This organization maintains the Examination for Professional Practice in Psychology (EPPP). Once graduated, doctoral students must pass the EPPP exam in order to be considered ‘licensed’ for practice.

Other Licensing Agencies

In addition to the EPPP, many states require additional licensing and professional development credits in order to maintain that status. If a branch of the profession overlaps with the general practice of psychology, an additional license may be required. Examples include:

  • Marriage and Family Therapist (MFT)
  • Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC)
  • Licensed Psychological Associate (LPA)
