What you’ll learn in this article…
- Texas requires both BACB certification and a TDLR-issued LBA license.
- Fieldwork totals 2,000 Standard or 1,500 Concentrated hours over 12+ months.
- UT Austin's 2024 first-time pass rate hit 70%, versus 51% nationally.
Becoming a behavior analyst in Texas usually means holding two credentials: national BCBA certification from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) and a Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). The state license is what authorizes practice.
The sequence runs in a fixed order: a qualifying master's degree, then 2,000 Standard or 1,500 Concentrated supervised fieldwork hours, then the BACB exam, then the TDLR application. Costs arrive in those same two stages, BACB first and TDLR second, and BACB coursework rules tighten in 2027.
Fieldwork must span at least 12 months, so no accelerated program shortens supervision below a full year.
BCBA Certification vs. Texas LBA License: What's the Difference?
One credential is national and voluntary; the other is state-issued and legally required. The LBA vs. BCBA split is the source of most confusion about BCBA requirements in Texas, so it helps to separate the two before you plan anything else.
Who Issues What
The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) is a national nonprofit that sets the standards for the Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) credential. It reviews your degree, coursework, and supervised fieldwork, and it administers the certification exam. A Texas state licensing board separately issues the Licensed Behavior Analyst (LBA) license, which governs who may practice and use that title inside the state.
Do You Need Both?
Yes. To practice as a behavior analyst in Texas, you need the state LBA license in addition to BCBA certification. The BACB credential alone does not authorize you to use the licensed title in Texas.
Which Comes First
Certification comes first. The Texas license application builds on an active BACB credential, so you earn the BCBA, then apply to the state. Employers and insurers tend to ask for both because they answer different questions. The BCBA shows you meet a national standard of training and ethics. The LBA shows you are legally permitted to practice in Texas and are accountable to a state board. Payers often rely on that state license when deciding who can deliver and bill for services.
Where BCaBA Fits
The Board Certified Assistant Behavior Analyst (BCaBA) is the assistant-level national credential. It requires a bachelor's degree rather than a master's, and BCaBAs work under the supervision of a BCBA. Texas has a matching assistant-level license for those who practice in the state.
If you are comparing paths, plan for the BCBA first and treat the LBA as the final step that lets you work.
BCBA Education Requirements: Degrees, Coursework, and the 2026 Changes
A master's degree is the floor for BCBA certification, and the BCBA degree requirements attached to that coursework get stricter in 2027. Texas applicants go through the BACB for the credential, so the BACB's rules decide whether your education counts.
Degree and Program Basics
The coursework route requires a master's degree or higher. The degree also can't be rushed: one earned in under a calendar year doesn't qualify. That means three consecutive primary semesters, four consecutive primary quarters, or 12 consecutive months under another calendar. The doctoral route is separate and demanding: an acceptable doctorate conferred at least 10 years ago, 10 or more years of postdoctoral practical experience, and 500 supervised BCBA fieldwork hours. Confirm with the BACB that your degree field is acceptable before you enroll.
Verified Sequence vs. a Degree With the Content
There are two ways your education can satisfy the BACB. In the first, you complete a program accredited or recognized by APBA or ABAI. In the second, you take behavior-analytic coursework, and every course must meet these conditions:
- Level and credit: Graduate-level academic credit from the institution where you enrolled.
- Recency: Completed within 10 years of your application year, so 2016 or later for a 2026 application.
- Grade: C or higher, or a pass.
- Timing: The full sequence cannot be finished in under one calendar year.
A degree that merely includes ABA classes does not equal a verified course sequence. Before paying tuition, review Best ABA Master's Programs in Texas and ask the program which pathway it satisfies, then check its listing on the BACB's university training pages.
What Changes in 2027
The 2026 rules include four pathways. Pathways 3 and 4 disappear in 2027, leaving only the accredited-program route and the coursework route. Anyone wanting Pathway 3 or 4 must finish every requirement and submit the application before January 1, 2027. Starting coursework or fieldwork does not preserve eligibility.
The 2027 coursework also has a new structure. Basic Principles of Behavior must be a standalone course. Behavior assessment and intervention must be two freestanding courses, or 90 content hours across two. Organizational behavior management (formerly personnel supervision and management) rises from 30 to 45 content hours as a freestanding course.
If You're Already Enrolled
There is no blanket exemption. To be reviewed under the 2022 requirements, your complete application, with payment and documents, must reach the BACB by December 31, 2026. After that, your 2022-era courses are compared against 2027 content. They can fall short if Basic Principles isn't standalone, assessment and intervention are combined below 90 hours, or the management course has only 30 hours. Fieldwork must also meet the requirements in force when you apply.
Foreign and Non-Standard Degrees
If your degree was earned abroad or in an unusual format, confirm its equivalency with the BACB before enrolling or applying. Don't assume it will transfer.
ABA Master's Programs in Texas: Fieldwork Options, Format, and Cost
Texas offers both ABAI-accredited behavior analysis degrees and online programs with a verified ABA course sequence, so check which pathway a program supports before you apply. Most programs below do not publicly confirm whether supervised fieldwork is built in, and UNT's online M.A. states outright that you must arrange fieldwork separately, so ask every program how it handles placements and supervision. The University of Houston-Clear Lake also offers an ABAI-accredited behavior analysis master's, but its format and cost details were not available for this comparison.
| Program | Degree | Format | Fieldwork Built In? | Approx. Tuition | Accreditation or Coursework Status |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|

Supervised Fieldwork Hours: Requirements, Supervision, and How to Find a Placement
The BACB requires 2,000 hours of Standard fieldwork or 1,500 hours of Concentrated fieldwork, and all hours must fall within a five-year window. Fieldwork also has to span at least 12 months, so a fast pace does not shorten the bcba timeline. Verify the minimum against the current BACB handbook for your pathway.
Supervision Rules
Each supervisory period must include 20 to 130 fieldwork hours. Supervision percentages differ by pathway:
- Standard: at least 5% of hours supervised (about 100 hours), with two real-time contacts per month.
- Concentrated: at least 10% supervised (about 150 hours), with six real-time contacts per month.
- Both pathways: at least 50% of supervision must be individual, group supervision cannot exceed 50%, and at least one contact each month must involve observing you deliver services to a client.
At least 60% of hours should be unrestricted activities, which leaves restricted work at 40% or less. Email exchanges and recording reviews do not count as real-time contact. Your supervisor must be an active BCBA or BCBA-D in good standing who has completed the BACB's 8-hour supervision training, per bcba certification requirements. Client observation hours count only under a signed supervision contract.
Programs With Fieldwork vs. Arranging Your Own
Some Texas ABA master's programs build placement and a supervisor into the curriculum. Others leave you to find and pay for your own supervisor, which adds cost and uncertainty. Ask any program whether placement is guaranteed, whether supervision is included in tuition, and who signs your forms.
Finding Paid or Low-Cost Supervision
- ABA agencies: many employers offer supervision as part of a technician or RBT job (see rbt to bcba career progression), which can bring your supervision cost to $0.
- School districts and clinics: some employ BCBAs who supervise staff working toward certification.
- Fee-based private supervisors: rates run roughly $35 to $135 per hour, with individual sessions often quoted near $75 to $80. Total supervision costs commonly land between $3,500 and $15,000 for Standard fieldwork and $5,250 to $22,500 for Concentrated. These are general-market estimates, not Texas-specific figures.
- University practicum networks: program faculty often know approved sites and supervisors.
Before paying anyone, confirm their BCBA status and training independently.
Document Everything
Complete a Monthly Fieldwork Verification Form each supervisory period. Your supervisor must review and sign it by the last day of the month after the supervision month. Both of you must keep records for at least seven years. Track your own hours, contact types, and observation time in a separate log.
Hours Earned Outside Texas
Fieldwork requirements come from the BACB, not the state. Hours that meet BACB standards should count wherever you earned them, provided the supervisor and documentation qualify. Confirm details with the BACB before relying on out-of-state hours.
BCBA Exam and BACB Application: Fees, Format, and Retakes
The BCBA credential comes from the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB), not from Texas. You earn national certification first, then pursue state licensure.
The Application-to-Exam Sequence
The BACB process runs in a fixed order:
- Meet eligibility: Finish your graduate degree, coursework, and supervised fieldwork before you apply.
- Apply to the BACB: Submit your certification application and documentation through the BACB portal.
- Wait for approval: You cannot book a test date until the BACB approves your application.
- Schedule with Pearson VUE: After approval, schedule and pay for your exam appointment directly with Pearson VUE.
Fees and Exam Format
The two fees go to different parties. The BACB charges a $245 certification application fee. Pearson VUE charges $125 per exam appointment, so a first attempt costs $370 in total.
You take the exam in person at a Pearson VUE testing center. The BCBA exam format includes 185 multiple-choice questions, each with four answer options, and you have four hours to finish. Only 175 questions count toward your score. The other 10 are unscored items, and you won't know which ones they are, so give every question full effort.
Retake Rules
If you don't pass, a retake application appears in your BACB portal within 48 hours. Each retake costs $265: a $140 retake application fee to the BACB plus a new $125 Pearson VUE appointment. Candidates in a BACB jurisdiction can make up to eight exam attempts, must wait at least 30 days between appointments, and must pass within two years of initial application approval.
Passing Before Your Texas License
Passing makes you a BCBA, but the LBA vs. BCBA distinction matters , it does not authorize practice in Texas. The BACB advises newly certified analysts to contact their state licensing board right away. Until Texas issues your license, you hold the national credential but cannot use the state's Licensed Behavior Analyst title, and you should not practice or bill as one.
A Realistic Timeline
Candidates who complete fieldwork alongside their master's degree can usually apply soon after graduation. Their remaining time goes to BACB review, exam preparation, and booking an open test date. If you still owe fieldwork hours, finishing them comes first. Plan for at least a 30-day gap after any failed attempt. The two-year window after approval is your outer limit, not a target.
In the BACB's 2024 university-program report, the University of Texas at Austin posted a first-time BCBA exam pass rate of 70% and the University of North Texas 69%, both well above the 51% national first-time pass rate the BACB reported for 2025.

Texas BCBA and LBA Application Checklist, With Costs
Texas licensure comes after BACB certification, so costs fall into two stages: BACB fees paid on the way to the BCBA, then Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR) fees for the LBA. Confirm every amount with the agency before you pay, because fee schedules change.
- Active BCBA or BCBA-D certificationThis is the prerequisite for a Texas LBA. TDLR also accepts a QABA credential. The retrieved sources do not confirm current BCBA application or base exam fees, so check the BACB website. Pearson VUE charges $27 to reschedule 30 to 5 days out and $32 from 5 days to 48 hours out. Changes inside 48 hours are not allowed.
- Form BHV-LIC-001-E and $165 feeThe initial LBA fee is $165 and non-refundable. The $110 fee applies only to the assistant behavior analyst license.
- BACB certification verificationTDLR accepts verified BACB certification as proof. A written BACB verification letter costs $25, but you only need one if it is requested.
- Criminal history background checkThis check is required. TDLR's fee page does not list a fingerprinting amount, so confirm it through TDLR's background-check instructions or the vendor.
- Transcripts and Texas examNeither is required. Texas has no separate jurisprudence exam.
- Estimated Texas-side totalBudget at least $165, plus the background-check charge and any optional verification letter.
What Related Occupations Pay in Texas
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics does not track behavior analysts as a separate occupation, so the figures below cover related occupations and should not be read as BCBA salaries. The wages are approximate annual figures for Texas from the 2025 Occupational Employment and Wage Statistics survey. Matching national figures were not available for this comparison, so check BLS national data before judging how Texas pay stacks up.
| Related Occupation | Texas Employment | 25th Percentile Wage | Median Wage | 75th Percentile Wage | Mean Wage |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Social and Human Service Assistants | 21,620 | $37,950 | $45,860 | $51,500 | $46,210 |
| Managers, All Other | 61,410 | $102,620 | $134,390 | $173,480 | $147,420 |
| Clinical and Counseling Psychologists | 3,640 | $59,990 | $83,660 | $106,510 | $92,130 |
| Psychology Teachers, Postsecondary | 3,380 | $55,970 | $77,060 | $101,610 | $86,210 |
Practicing as a behavior analyst in Texas takes two credentials, not one: national BCBA certification from the BACB, followed by a Licensed Behavior Analyst license from the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation. Plan your education, fieldwork, and budget around both from the start.
