Educational, School, and Counseling Psychology - Counseling Psychology (PhD)

Accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1953, the Counseling Psychology program offered by College of Education in the Department of Educational, School, & Counseling Psychology in the University of Missouri, in Columbia, is one of the top programs in the country, utilizing the scientist-practitioner model while also valuing the mentoring and apprenticeship models of learning.

The Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program takes between 4 and 5 years to complete. Students admitted to the program that have not obtained their master’s degree must complete a relevant master’s degree and receive a favorable Department review prior to continuing work toward a Ph.D.

The application deadline is December 1st, with classwork beginning the following fall.

Tuition for in-state students is about $530 per credit hour, while out-of-state tuition is closer to $870 per credit hour, not including additional costs and fees like books, travel, or student service fees. Most student who desire funding assistance have the opportunity to apply for a university assistantship, carrying a tuition waiver. Other financial aid is available in the form of scholarships, fellowships, grants, and student loans.

The Counseling Psychology Ph.D. requires 72 semester hours beyond the bachelor’s degree, at least 15 semester hours of research and independent study, and at least 12 hours of dissertation research. Students must also complete a 1 full-year full-time internship (or 2 year part-time internship), approximately 2000 clock hours, to complete the program
