Department of Psychology - Counseling Psychology (PhD)

The Counseling Psychology Doctoral program at The University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg consists of a minimum of 84 hours. This training program takes approximately 6 years to complete and is based on the scientist-practitioner training model, including opportunities for research involvement in applied, empirically-supported interventions. Students enroll in 3 or 4 courses, participate in supervised clinical training, and conduct research each semester.

Program admissions is offered only once a year with a deadline of December 1st. Only 5 individuals are selected each year, starting class in the fall.

Students not only attend class, but they participate in research activities, meetings, clinical work, and other programs and related tasks. Those who are in good standing are awarded assistantships that come with a tuition waiver and stipend in exchange for 20 hours of community-based or department-centric work per week. They also have the opportunity to participate in grant funded research, support teaching faculty, and even teach undergraduate courses, as well as take part in funded assistantships, including supervised clinical experiences in the community.

As an APA-accredited doctoral program, students study the core areas of psychology, including cognitive, affective, and biological bases of behavior, research, statistics, human development, and diversity. Students also learn applied skills through counseling theories and assessment, vocational counseling, multicultural counseling, and evidence based approaches to treatment. Additional research and statistic courses are available, including substance abuse counseling, counseling and assessment of child and adolescent problems, and coursework on marriage and family counseling.
