Accredited by the American Psychological Association since 2002, the School of Education at Howard University offers a PhD program in Counseling Psychology designed to educate and train counseling psychologists using the scientist-practitioner philosophy, encouraging students to identify and use culturally relevant prevention and intervention strategies, focusing on the client’s optimum strengths. The total cost for full-time enrollment in the Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program is around $15,000 per semester. Students are eligible to receive funding through the graduate school and through the School of Education via a part-time assistantship, including tuition remission and yearly stipend. Other financial aid is available, including scholarships, grants, and student loans.

Coursework includes a total of 117 credit hours of research and statistics, intervention, psychology core, supervised training, and research and dissertation credits.
