Department of Psychology - Counseling Psychology (PhD)

APA accredited since 1954, the Counseling Psychology program in the Department of Psychology at the University of Florida in Gainesville focuses on personal and interpersonal functioning of individuals, as well as emotional, social, vocational, educational, health-related, developmental, and organizational concerns. Students are trained as scientists, scholars, and practitioners, as they work in a complete range of occupational settings as creative scientists and human service providers. The program adheres to a generalist, scientist-practitioner training model that emphasized education and training in the integration of theory, scientific thinking, assessment, research, and practice.

A minimum of 90 credit hours are required to graduate, including required courses, dissertation requirements, practicum and internship, and electives. The program requirements for practicum are designed to ensure that each student accumulated over 900 pre-doctoral, pre-internship practicum hours, supervised by a licensed psychologist in an individual or group supervision context.

All first-year students are offered funding and it’s available for 5 years for all students making good progress in the program.

Student progress will be assessed each year in April by the counseling psychology faculty, reviewing progress an performance in coursework, seminars, scholarship and research, assistantships, teaching, practicum and internship placement, and meeting of milestones, including thesis equivalency, qualifying exams, and dissertation.
