Department of Psychology - Counseling Psychology (PhD)
Accredited by the American Psychological Association since 1980, the Department of Psychology at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville offers a Counseling Psychology program, utilizing the scientist-practitioner-advocate model of training, immersing students in a sequence of coursework and field learning experiences designed to develop a broad base of psychological knowledge, as well as a high level of skills in both research and practice.
A variety of students are accepted into the Counseling Psychology program—some holding master’s degree while other are still undergraduates. Full-time enrollment is required, and students must stay in residence for the first 3 years of their training. Depending on their education experience, students with an undergraduate degree and a strong background in psychology should expect to spend 6 years in full-time study to earn their Ph.D., including dissertation research and a final year of full-time internship.

The Ph.D. program only accepts 5 to 6 students each year.
Tuition for in-state, full-time students is about $302 per credit hour, including fees, while out-of-state tuition and fees are about $1,000 per credit hour. New students coming into the program receive a full tuition waiver, stipend, and health insurance through an assistantship, allowing them to work 20 hours per week. Other financial aid is available in the form of fellowships, scholarships, grants, and student loans, if needed.
