Department of Educational and Psychological Studies - Counseling Psychology (PhD)

Accredited by the American Psychology Association since 1953, the Counseling Psychology Program at the University of Maryland in College Park is based on the scientist-practitioner model, emphasizing the value of concurrent training in research, practice, and integration, creating a positive environment that trains students in general psychology as behavior science, allowing students to be become competent in conduction research and providing counseling.

Whether a student is entering the Ph.D. program with a bachelor’s or master’s degree, it takes about 6 years to complete. It usually takes 3 to 4 years of full-time coursework, and students typically take their 4th year to complete comprehensive examinations and to begin work on their dissertation, as well as finish up any remaining classes. The 5th and 6th year, students will finish their dissertation and complete an internship.

Tuition for the 2013-2014 academic year, based on 10 credits per semester, is about $11,500 for residents and $25,000 for non-residents. This amount does not include university costs or fees, including housing, books, student services, and more. Most students will carry a 10 to 20 hour assistantship per week, and depending on their level their stipend amount can cover the majority of their tuition. Fellowships are also available and may include additional benefits aside from tuition remission.
